This summer, Caribbean and Latin American countries Jamaica, Grenada, Venezuela, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines have been impacted by Hurricane Beryl. This hurricane intensified to a category five and after storming through the Caribbean, it made landfall in Mexico as a category two. Up to 180,000 people have required humanitarian assistance following the hurricane. Lots of infrastructure was destroyed in these countries including entire communities, homes, and businesses. The hurricane occurred from late June 2024 to early July 2024.
While the effects of Hurricane Beryl were not life-threatening, some damage led to the community coming together to rebuild. 8000 troops headed to the Yucatan peninsula to provide support, including National Guard, Airforce, and Army members. On a small island, known as Holbox Island, many citizens had to evacuate as the storm surge was potentially dangerous to them. Additionally, many tourists were forced to evacuate from their hotels and find places to stay that were more inland. The hurricane moved quickly through Mexico and thankfully did not cause much damage. Many tourist areas were without power; however, it was quickly fixed and back up and running. The Mexican people came together to undo the damages fast, and they did not let this hurricane tear them down.
